This dataset contains biodiversity data focussing on invertebrates (soil, ground, tree canopy), and plants collected from The Carbon Community woodland creation experiment in Wales. This includes measurements from 72 plots, covering experimental treatment combinations of woodland type (native broadleaf vs sitka spruce), enhanced weathering (with/without basalt addition), and soil microbiome inoculation (with/without soil from mature habitat type), compared to a grassland control treatment.
The experiment was established in April 2021 and aims to assess strategies for maximising woodland carbon storage. The biodiversity data from each experimental plot was collected in summer 2023.

Provenance & quality

The experiment has a randomised blocked design, with 8 blocks of the 9 treatments, giving a total of 72 replicate plots.
Invertebrate samples were collected from the soil (invertebrates extracted from soil cores using Tullgren funnels), ground layer (pitfall trapping) and tree canopy (beating) in June/July 2023. Invertebrates were identified to a minimum of Order in the lab in autumn/winter 2023. All carabid beetles from the pitfall trap samples were identified to species.
Plant data was recorded directly in the field in June/July 2023, with percentage cover estimates assigned using the DOMIN scale.
